Why I Became a Pediatrician with Dr. Barakah Day
I was always told to do something I love because then it wouldn’t feel like work. I knew kids were fun to be around, and I admired kids for being concerned about things that matter. So I knew I wanted to do something involving kids, something hard, and something that helped people. Those were my only thoughts going into college. I had a lot of diverse interests, but it was easy to eliminate most other careers. For some reason, I couldn’t get anybody to pay me to play sports.
I grew up watching the response my dad’s patients had to him after removing skin cancers and how they knew all about his family, including what sports we were all playing at the time. I realized I wanted to do something similar. As soon as I knew I wanted to be a doctor though, I immediately knew I wanted to be a pediatrician. Why? Kids in diapers- cute. Adults in diapers- not as cute. Jk
At Notre Dame, theology classes were required for everybody as a freshman, but I liked them so much I ended up taking enough to earn a degree. I thought it was a good combination to learn about both the physical and spiritual aspects of a person. I am grateful I was encouraged to take classes in something I loved. I was also interested in Biology, and it’s been fascinating in general to learn how our bodies work and the intricate ways it communicates within itself and even to other people (thinking of an infants’ saliva communicating to Mom exactly what they need in terms of their nutrition, immunity, etc). The longer I’ve practiced, the more I’ve seen how everything is connected.
After reading Dr. Cevey’s entry on why she became a pediatrician, I had to laugh because while an aptitude test told her should be a physician or air traffic controller, I was told by a teacher predicting all of our future careers in junior school, that I would be the next Dave Berry, a satirical writer! If I ever get the time to write down half the things my kids and my patients have said, it might still happen for me.
Again, back to one of the reasons I love kids. They aren’t as serious as adults, and they don’t give up their laughs. My mom always loves to laugh and never lost this wisdom.
I’m happy to help parents take care of what matters the very most- their little hellions, I mean, children.
