Milestone Moments: Brady Is Heading to Kindergarten!
A Reflection with Dr. Day
Dr. Cevey, who is on the verge of sending her youngest off to college, asked me to write a piece from the other end of the spectrum, as I send my oldest of three off to kindergarten. My first thought was sadness at the thought of sending him off to college one day.
It’s difficult to write about him without tearing up. He’s a sweetheart! I’m very lucky to get time in this life with him. I’ve always wanted to be a mom, and I remember I screamed so loud when I saw that double pink line that Brad, my husband, thought I saw a cockroach. It was Father’s Day when we found out, and life hasn’t been the same since. As a baby, Brady always had a big smile, but would definitely take his time to observe and study new people. He’s very intuitive. Sometimes I forget he’s only 5 and a half; with almost 2 and almost 4 year old siblings, he is our most mature child. He’s been very sweet with our baby Bella, who is now almost 2, and picked up on the concept that some rules don’t apply to her quickly. He used to love to have his toy dinosaur knock something over and then tell me “mama she’s a baby, she doesn’t know better” with a big smile, knowing I can’t argue with that logic.
Having younger kids is always a reminder of how quickly your children change. Was Brady as soft and squishy as Bella yesterday or three and a half years ago? When did he stop asking to be held all of the time, and when did he stop following me into the bathroom lol? It’s a constant reminder to try to concern yourself with things that matter, the fleeting things that only happen at certain ages. If anybody has any ideas on how to do this better, please let me know.
I once heard a child described as a parent’s heart beating outside of their chest. And what I hope for his heart is that it stays joyful. I hope they keep him smiling and enjoying school as long as they can. In short, he only gets to be a kid once, and I hope they protect that.
Sincerely,
Dr. Day
