“Thank you”

A Reflection with Dr. Cevey

Most of you know that in August I sent my son, Josh, off to China for his first semester of college.  We as a family have been able to have group video chats on pretty much a weekly basis, but obviously it's not quite the same as actually having the whole family at home together.  Given that China obviously doesn't celebrate Christmas, I didn't think there was a chance that their semester breaks would be at the same time, but we realized in October that the end of my daughter Emily's winter break from Baylor actually would overlap for just under a week with the beginning of Josh's!  I would finally for the first time in over five months get to physically see both of them under my roof at the same time!  Though obviously thrilled and excited by that idea, I kinda forgot that I could take time off from work to also be home with them.  It wasn't until Ms. Kendra Carter, the Abbott formula representative who has called upon Cevey Pediatrics for over one-and-a-half decades and who has basically heard about how my kids have grown up over the years pointed it out to me, that I actually realized I could ask Dr. Berica Day to cover for me.  Being a fellow mom, Dr. Day was gracious enough to agree to do so, even when it came up that she'd be doing this when her husband was incapacitated from foot surgery and couldn't help with their children.

The cold front that moved across the country earlier this month threatened to thwart those plans, because icy weather at the Dallas-Fort Worth airport resulted in Josh's flight from China being outright cancelled, and on the day I received that email, American Airlines notified me that they would not be able to put him on a flight to get here to San Antonio until January 18th, just missing the end of the window in which Emily would still be home.  I was heartbroken! Luckily after an hour on the phone with an individual named "Ana" who worked for a company reportedly subcontracted by Expedia to schedule international flights, we were able to find a flight on United Airlines that would get him home the day after he was originally scheduled to arrive.  It cost a little more than the original flight, but considering the new travel plans were only three days away, I was grateful we were able to get anything at all arranged.  Once that wrinkle was ironed out, everything else from that point on aligned itself so smoothly for me to be able to enjoy our time together.

We welcomed Josh's arrival at the San Antonio International Airport on Sunday with a silly sign his sister made referencing a shared inside joke.  I had too many patients already scheduled for Monday to reschedule, so I still worked a normal day on Monday and the first hour of Tuesday morning.  Dr. Day pointed out that we could have just rescheduled the one patient already scheduled that morning, but I laughingly reminded her that the chances of my teenage kids even having gotten out of bed by the time I got home after being at the office for an hour were minuscule.  Ha ha, all of y'all who have teenagers can definitely attest to that, right?  Anyways, from when we had picked him up to when Emily left on Friday morning for Baylor, we got to spend all kinds of time together cooking and eating foods that Josh had gotten extremely homesick for over the preceding several months, playing family games like Mah-jong and card games like Spades and Hearts that require four players, recreating "Christmas morning pajama pictures," listening to Josh and Emily do music together, and even getting professional family photos done courtesy of Ms. Brooke Grinsell of Heartsweet Photography, whose work y'all have seen adorning my walls in the waiting room of the office.  I think it's clear when looking at the photos she took compared to the attempted family photos we tried to take ourselves why she's the professional!  All kidding aside, though, I just wanted to share with y'all a few moments from the happiest and most relaxing days of my life that I've enjoyed for a long time, courtesy of so many!  So, I just wanted to write a post that would thank everyone that made it possible, including all those mentioned above, along with my entire office staff, and my patients who rolled with possible rescheduling hiccups.  Thank you to all of y'all, or in Mandarin, which Josh is slowly getting more fluent in, “Xièxie”.

Sincerely,

Dr. Cevey
