Appreciating the Present in the Spirit of the Holiday Season

I sit here on Christmas afternoon writing this as the rest of my family is just hanging out and relaxing, now that mysterious Amazon packages have all been unwrapped and opened, and reflect on this holiday season.

At the office, the cases of flu, strep throat, and RSV that were at record levels in November are leveling off and COVID cases, though creeping back up again, aren’t yet spreading like wildfire.  This allowed us at the office to actually enjoy putting up decorations, splurge in the fun of a wreath-making contest (congratulations, Veronica, on your festive Christmas village-themed winning entry!), and excitedly plan gift ideas to surprise each other with.

Away from the office, though I also chose to make this Christmas weekend also a four-day weekend, it was mostly centered around spending time at home relaxing with my husband and kids, rather than celebrating with extended family as we did at Thanksgiving.  The extreme cold front, though thankfully not accompanied by any snow, probably factored significantly in our decision to mostly stay inside, and allowed us to find the time to watch a movie or two, nap, and even play a couple of family board games also.  We did venture out last night for our church’s Christmas Eve candlelight service, and this morning for the actual Christmas service, but beyond those outings and a grocery trip at the start of the weekend to make sure we had enough food to nibble on through the rest of the weekend, that was it.  Can’t get much more low-key while still being in the Christmas spirit than that!  I have a feeling that next year, things might be a little more hectic, since my parents will have finally retired and moved down here to Texas, and we’ll all be living in the same state for the first time since I left for college, and since that will be my daughter’s first Christmas home from college.  But that’s next year… I’ve been trying to be more intentionally mindful about spending as much time enjoying the present as I usually do planning for the future.

I hope that amidst the holiday festivities, no matter what you and your family specifically celebrate, that you, too, are able to experience some quiet precious moments with your families.  As the months seem to fly by more and more quickly with each passing year, I’ve realized the need to try to be more intentionally mindful about spending as much time enjoying the present as I usually do thinking about and planning for the future.  I usually obstinately refuse to make New Year’s resolutions, but this idea actually seems meaningful enough to deserve it!
